Jim Henley has explained why he thinks escalation of the war with Iraq is more likely than not:

The domestic political consequences to Bush of not conquering Iraq are substantial. The domestic benefits of not conquering Iraq are far less certain. Therefore: war.

I would emphasize that Bush will have little credibility if he doesn’t go to war. What is he supposed to say, “You know all those bad things I”ve been saying for the last year Iraq would do if we didn’t stop them, well I was wrong”?

If he were to say that, people at least shouldn’t take Bush seriously.
