Apparently it is "weasely" to criticize Trent Lott about his controversial comments unless call for his resignation from the Senate or at least no longer being Majority Leader. (Link courtesy of Glenn Reynolds.)
At the risk of being "weasely," I don't think he should resign from the Senate and, not being a Republican, I don't believe I should be telling the GOP who should and shouldn't be one of their leaders. I believe that any decently informed voter in Mississippi should have known about Lott's position on the issue of race -his now infamous statement wasn't at all out of line with his record- and I think even a racist has a right to run for office and be elected. What this says about the area that elects such a person and a party that will have such a person not only as a member but in a position of leadership is an entirely different manner. posted by micah holmquist at 12/16/2002 08:16:00 PM
