MSU football coach Bobby Williams has suspended defensive end Greg Taplin for a violation of team rules. The suspension is just for tomorrow's game against Michigan.
I'm getting tired of thinking what I said Wednesday.
Izzo’s success gets to heart of the difficulty in picking a head coach. Izzo was an assistant coach with the program for over a decade before taking over in 1995 and turned down several opportunities to be the head coach at other schools. Izzo it seems was determined to follow in the footsteps of Jud Heathcote and didn’t want to follow any other career path. Maybe it is just me but that background doesn’t say ambitious and innovative, even though that is exactly what he turned out to be.
For outsiders, and probably most insiders, there was no reason to believe that Izzo would be as good as he turned out to be and many criticized the decision to name him head coach. Similarly there was probably no reason to believe on January 2, 2000 that Bobby Williams would be an outstanding head coach for the MSU football team but he coached a victorious team in the Citrus Bowl and it really wouldn’t have been fair to not give him the nod for the next season. By now, however, it appears that Williams isn’t going to take the team to the “next level” and that when the season is over, he should probably be replaced by somebody from outside of the program. Whoever MSU hires, if MSU does replace Williams, there will be no guarantee of success. You never know exactly how a coach and a team will fare. posted by micah holmquist at 11/01/2002 01:02:00 PM
