Eight cities, including Cambridge, Massachusetts, have come out in opposition to the Patriot Act, according to this story by Dean Schabner of ABC News.
While this is certainly interesting keep this paragrpah in mind:
"One of the recognitions is that there is a supremacy act and that there are limits to what a city can do," [Cambridge Councilman Brian]Murphy said. "If the FBI chooses to take actions in Cambridge, they're able to do that under the law as it is constituted.
Actually I'm not sure this is completely accurate. It would seem like a city could order its employees not to comply and also make sure its systems were as unhelpful to law enforcement as possible i.e. a library would minimize the records on what books patrons have checked out in the past. Still, if such measures aren't being considered in these progressive cities, then it is unlikely they are going to happen anywhere anytime soon.
