micah holmquist's irregular thoughts and links

Welcome to the musings and notes of a Cadillac, Michigan based writer named Micah Holmquist, who is bothered by his own sarcasm.

Please send him email at micahth@chartermi.net.

I had a bad feeling about today's game going in and unfortunately I was right. The lack of a pass rush, dropped passes, the inability to stop Michigan running back Chris Parry, the inability to stop Michigan with any regularity on third down and penalties (some questionable, some not, but none of which will ever be part of the record like they do when they don't benefit Michigan with 2001 being the obvious example even though any decent notations on the game would have to acknowledge two bad calls in the second half that helped Michigan, and don't even get me started about 2000) lead to Michigan State losing to Michigan today, 27-20.

If there is a positive out of this game, and I'm not sure there is, it has to be that MSU probably shouldn't have been even in this game given how well Michigan played on offense and the numerous mistakes that the Spartans made. And yet they were, which reminds of the teams of another Michigan State coach named Tom Izzo. Of course Izzo's teams have been doing that for the better part of a decade and I don't know if John L. Smith's teams will manage to keep this up and even win a few of these games. But there is hope.

"I think we'll see what they are made of next week," former Spartan quarterback and current Michigan State radio color commentator Bill Burke said minutes ago. I think Burke's right. The 7-2 and 4-1 in conference play Spartans go up against Ohio State next week in Columbus. After that it is another road game against Wisconsin before finishing the season at home against Penn State. If Michigan State is able to consistently have good seasons in the years they lose to Michigan, as well as start to beat Michigan a bit more, they will be able to improve the program quite a bit.

"Let's Go Blue" played on a flute sound like the theme to Rocky and His Friends. There's nothing wrong with this. In fact I think it is cool.

Why does ABC announcer Brent Musburger have a job? I don't even remember why he was fired by CBS but it was a great move. "Is there a worse announcer than Brent Musburger?" Rapman Bobby D asked nearly 14 months ago.

No sir there is not. Today I was informed that Michigan State doesn't have any rivals besides Michigan. Yep forget about Notre Dame.
