Bush vs. Powell - Who should decide if the United States attacks Iraq?
President Bush and U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell appear to be at odds over how to proceed in U.S. policy towards Iraq. Specifically they sound to be at odds over whether or not the U.S. should provide evidence to justify military action against Iraq.
Listen, it's a healthy debate for people to express their opinion. People should be allowed to express their opinion. But America needs to know, I'll be making up my mind [as to what to do regarding Iraq] based upon the latest intelligence and how best to protect our own country plus our friends and allies.
In a September 1 interview on the radio program BBC Breakfast with Frost U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said the world should see the evidence that the U.S. has against Iraq:
I think that the world has to be presented with the information, with the intelligence that's available, a debate is needed within the international community so that everybody can make a judgement about this [attacking Iraq].
These positions can not be easily reconciled so does this suggest a renegade Secretary of State or a shifting plan or the lack of a plan? All appear to be possibilities. posted by micah holmquist at 9/02/2002 07:25:00 PM
